Big Scare on Bloor Street

Ever notice those gas meters sticking out of the sidewalks on Bloor Street?

Back a few years ago, the lines were brought to the outside front of all the buildings. The point was to make things easier for the meter reader to record numbers.  I remember thinking at the time that this was putting those gas lines in harm’s way…

On a glorious Wednesday afternoon in May, an elderly man was trying to park his car in front of our building. He accidentally jumped the curb when he stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brake.  His car smashed into the gas meter between our office and the hair salon next door…

Yikes! A broken gas line is a scary thing. Especially when the gas is whooshing out in massive quantities like it was that day.

The good news is that no one was injured and our building wasn’t engulfed in a massive fireball.

Our team acted fast… Two of our assistants ran outside to help the elderly couple out of their car and escort them away from the scene. The rest our team (and patients) cleared out the back door and away from the hazard.

The police were immediately on the scene and the fire-trucks soon followed. The entire block was quickly evacuated and Bloor Street was shut down for all traffic. Even the subway was closed off as a precautionary measure.

It was a glorious sunny afternoon and we all gathered on the corner a block away. News helicopters circled overhead, and news reporters were doing live interviews on the scene.

Our two heroic dental assistants were interviewed for the local news report on CP24.

The good news is that no one was injured and our building wasn’t engulfed in a massive fireball.  Enbridge Gas soon arrived to the accident scene and the gas line was shut off.

Life was back to normal within a few hours. Yet, the whole incident has left me feeling a little more vulnerable… 25 years of building an exceptional dental business all blown away during a parking mishap?

Fortunately, we’re still standing.

Stay healthy and keep smiling!

Can you imagine the hilarity if that gas meter was actually connected to laughing gas? That would make the whole affair a lot more fun! I don’t think you need to worry about your entire business crashing down because of a gas leak though. Just a hindrance on appointments that day!
